In both First and Second Timothy Paul is giving advice to young Timothy as he ministers in the church in Ephesus. Timothy is taking on a very difficult task. The church has been attacked by legalists. The Gospel message has been attacked. This is a real spiritual battle ground and Paul wants to encourage Timothy not to get side-tracked.
Paul tells Timothy in II Timothy chapter 4 to ” Preach the word ! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and teaching.” In verse 5 Paul goes on to say, “…..endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry”. Because of all of the stuff that has been thrown at the church in Ephesus , Paul knows that it would be very easy for Timothy to spend most of his time on everything but evangelism.
In I Timothy chapter 2, Paul reminds Timothy that ” first of all” the church should be praying for the salvation of all men.
What a great reminder to all of us today. As a pastor I need to take inventory of how I spend my time. Is evangelism being pushed to the side in my schedulel? At the end of the day, no matter what else I have done, if I have neglected evangelism, I need to adjust my life. How about you?
